This CatEye Adventure I have holds the altitude until the atmospheric pressure causes it to move smoothly up or down over several hours. It is much more accurate than my Garmin Touring GPS which only uses GPS altitude which varies quite a bit. An added feature of the CatEye is that you can set up a reference altitude, such as the altitude of your driveway obtained accurately from Google Earth, and quickly recalibrate the altimeter to that altitude. I have 6 bike computers all in use on various bikes and this one is by far my favorite. I am a picky engineer and don't give out five star ratings easily. When I started riding computers like this were the norm, so it was no more complicated than I remember, I had the programming portion done in 10 minutes. The instructions are small and printing out the PDF is helpful. And the buttons are also small using a toothpick with a flattened end facilitated this better, but the rest of the set up was simple.

In fact I bought 3 of these for my 3 bikes. Almost one after another one, the SENSOR lost the encoding, therefore I now have 3 computers good for scrap. I took the computers to pro shops and all said that they have had several customers buying Cateye and the sensor losing the code. Therefore the computer cannot be activated as there is no signal transmission. DHL cost is higher than cost of the 3 computers. This is my second Cateye y just a couple days. For this price is is the best Cycle Computer in the market, considering it is a new model and much cheaper than older models. Also considering CatEye is a high quality top brand in the world since many years. I wish it had a Cadence option, which is the only thing this model is lacking. Useless, it sits in a corner. Maybe it was a bad unit. But they wouldn't (couldn't?) replace it. Live and learn. Too bad no one else makes a non-GPS unit like this that does climbing and slope as well as miles etc. Now they want hundreds for a GPS unit which has frankly not the accuracy as a on-board revolution counter for distance, given the meandering path we usually take on roads etc. Altimeter seems accurate compared to my phone's GPS. Distance is very accurate compared to road mile markers (less than 1% error. Obviously this depends on setting the correct tire size). Temperature sensor works well, seems pretty accurate. Grade seems fairly accurate-More accurate than the Gyro in my pickup. Overall an excellent all-around cyclocomputer, will be the perfect computer for touring in the mountains (eventually my plan). Good display, works well in direct sunlight (it's not lighted though). Display has three lines to show four different stats (Awesome. Oh yeah, it also shows your speed. Overall this is an excellent cyclocomputer for what I do. I use it for commuting to work and mountain biking. It does not have a cadence sensor, but I don't care.

Can't comment on battery life yet, as I haven't run them down in several hundred miles (it did ship with dead batteries). It will be the perfect cyclocomputer for touring in the mountains (whenever I get around to doing that). Only downside is getting the damn thing set up. I'm an engineer, so I figured it couldn't be too difficult to follow some instructions, however, the instructions are awful, and the setup is not intuitive or obvious at all. The cons: The display is not customizable, so you can only see the certain information on certain screens rather than choosing your own format, ie you cannot see altitude, temperature, distance and speed all at the same time only speed altitude, grade, and average speed (arbitrary examples). The button system is terrible, the one on the front is difficult to push, recalibrating the altimeter means playing with tiny buttons on the back and overall changing and settings is a right pain. Day one I spent about 6 hours riding in a steady rain, by about hour 3 the display would no longer change due to the wet, that is the best I can gather because it worked again when it had a chance to dry out. Overall, I would not recommend this computer, but apart from the expensive and short battery life gps systems lots of reasearch lead me to believe there are not many good options aboutIt therefore is not properly functional. In detail: - Altitude reading is usually off by 10-40%. - Home altitude is ALWAYS 33-40% lower upon return to home base than the previously (and correctly) set home altitude. This occurs even after short rides, e.g. after 50 minutes.

That means that all altitude readings in between are also wrong and yet one needs to reset home altitude before every ride to get at least some approximate reading. What makes this worse is that the resetting process is a mega-fiddly nightmare (juggling three tiny buttons at the back, with near-useless instructions). -Ascent-descent-gradient readings constantly jump all over the place especially at low speeds even when the gradient is even, rendering this function nearly totally useless. We have many steep hills in the Brighton area and the South Downs, so say that a hill has a fairly even 14% gradient, the readings will constantly jump anywhere between 3%(!) and 16%, a total nuisance. The computer also takes an eternity, i.e. 15-30 (!) seconds, to read a significantly changing gradient (e.g. downhill turns into uphill), which adds to it being not properly functional. Moreover: -No backlight! -Numbers other than speed are too small, cluttered display. -The reliable basic functions like reading speed, time and distance, are offered by any basic computer half the price. So why bother? So back it went. Truly disappointing. ------------- 4 weeks ago: I have received mine today, set it up and tried it out during a quick two hours' ride through Brighton's South Downs. While I'd say on a first impression that the computer works overall very well and reliably, I also agree with Mike D. on its faults, especially regarding its small size. The unit was very tricky to set up with all the tiny buttons in front and back that have to be pressed in various combinations and sequences - better get a magnifying glass and don't try this in a rush. I assume however that other makes like VDO will be similar in this regard. I can't comment on the Cateye Adventure's function in rain yet. On the positive side, the unit seems to be very solidly locked into its mounting bracket and onto the handlebar or stem, and it is also easy to remove. Unsurprisingly perhaps, the angle is also easily adjustable for good viewing, the sensor sits well on the fork and looks good and nicely streamlined. Changing between diplayed numbers is easily done with a click, and so far the computer hasn't lost a beat even on bumpier parts of the road. And yes, it captures a ton of data, and I'd say it does it reliably so except for altitude. And it has style, unlike most other cycling computers. I very nearly bought the VDO MC 2.0 WL, and only refrained from it for two reasons: because of the cluttered display (although I now think that it's probably no worse than the tiny Cateye numbers), its less than stylish looks (not that important though), and because of some comments that the VDO lags too much in picking up changes in speed (a significant fault if true but I'm not sure if it's really unusally bad). Unfortunately, there isn't much choice between brands if you want more than the basic data and a reliably working unit - but ask yourself before you buy, how much data do you really need. So I wonder if I should get something much simpler and more legible. Or the VDO. However, I'll give the Cateye a bit more time and see if I get used to it.

Overall, I'd say that the Cateye functions very well once it's set up, and it reliably captures a lot of data. Whilst he device initially worked ok for a while it very soon becomes loose in its fixing housing rattles annoyingly and then packs up part the way through a ride. I had my first one replaced, but unfortunately I have had exactly the same issues with the replacement. On top of that the device chews batteries and the one I have has now developed a crack (and I haven't been involved in any crashes or anything). It's going in the bin and I definitely won't be looking at another cateye. It's not so accurate that it gives perfect percentages, and there is a time lag between you starting a climb and the correct percentage showing, but it has given me an idea of how the climbs that I do compare to others.
